Background of the Study
Mental health stigma refers to the negative beliefs, attitudes, and discrimination faced by individuals with mental health conditions. It can have detrimental effects on the quality of life of those affected, including reduced access to care, social isolation, and poor treatment outcomes (Ali & Ogunyemi, 2023). Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, play a pivotal role in the identification, treatment, and support of individuals with mental health disorders. However, their own attitudes and beliefs about mental health can influence the quality of care they provide. Studies have shown that nurses may hold stigmatizing attitudes toward individuals with mental health disorders, which can adversely affect their interactions with patients and hinder effective care (Olatunji et al., 2023).
In Nigeria, mental health stigma remains a significant barrier to accessing care, with societal perceptions of mental illness often rooted in cultural beliefs and misconceptions. Edo State Specialist Hospital in Benin City provides a wide range of mental health services, but there is limited research on the knowledge and attitudes of nurses toward mental health stigma. Given the critical role nurses play in managing and supporting individuals with mental health conditions, understanding their attitudes and knowledge of mental health stigma is essential to improving patient care and reducing the stigma associated with mental illness.
Statement of the Problem
Mental health stigma remains prevalent in many healthcare settings, including Edo State Specialist Hospital. Nurses’ negative attitudes toward mental health patients can contribute to the stigma that surrounds mental illness, potentially leading to poorer care and worse health outcomes for patients. It is essential to assess the knowledge and attitudes of nurses toward mental health stigma to understand its impact on patient care and to develop strategies to reduce stigma and improve the overall quality of mental health services.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the mental health and general care units of Edo State Specialist Hospital. It will assess their knowledge and attitudes toward mental health stigma and the impact on patient care. The study will not include nurses from other hospitals or regions, limiting the generalizability of the findings.
The limitations of the study include potential bias in self-reported data and the challenges of measuring the impact of attitudes on care quality. The study will also focus exclusively on mental health stigma and will not examine other factors affecting the care of individuals with mental health disorders.
